UNESCO’s BIOCOM project protects Madagascar’s Montagne des Français by promoting sustainable and educational practices to safeguard local natural resources.
The BIOCOM project: Towards sustainable protection of the Montagne des Français in Madagascar
Located in northern Madagascar, the harmonious landscape of the Montagne des Français (MDF) is undergoing massive deforestation and over-exploitation of its forests for wood and charcoal production. The forest area has shrunk dramatically, endangering this nature reserve. UNESCO’s safeguarding actions adopt educational and preventive approaches with local communities, encouraging local economic alternatives.
